JULIET OF THE SPIRITS (137 minutes) M
After the success of his fantasy autobiography 8½, Federico Fellini strove to outdo himself with this 1965 extravaganza, starring his wife Giuiletta Masina as a frustrated upper-class woman who enters a dream world ruled by forces both psychological and occult. Fellini's first film in colour (and what colour!) it's flamboyant, chaotic and sometimes dazzling. Screens as part of the Alice is Everywhere season, with Maya Deren's classic experimental short At Land. 35mm print. ACMI, Sat 2 June, 4pm.
MADEMOISELLE PARADIS (97 minutes) Unrated 18+
In 18th-century Vienna, a young blind woman (Maria-Victoria Dragus) achieves precocious fame as a pianist – but her talent starts to falter once the enigmatic Dr Mesmer (Devid Striesow) helps her regain her sight. Based on a true story, Barbara Albert's film is less a conventional biopic than a metaphor for the plight of the female artist, complex enough to demand thinking through. Screens as part of the German Film Festival. Como, Sat 2 June, 6.30pm and Kino, Sun 3 June, 2pm.
Creature from The Black Lagoon.

In a seaside town in 1950s Britain, a well-meaning widow (Emily Mortimer) sets out to open a bookshop, a harmless venture met with intense disapproval in some quarters. Isobel Coixet's adaptation of Penelope Fitzgerald's 1978 novel softens the sharp edges of its source, but there's pleasure in hearing actors like Patricia Clarkson and Bill Nighy deliver authentic Fitzgerald lines. Selected.
Film still from Barbara Albert's movie Mademoiselle Paradis.
