Witness Andrew told radio 3AW host Neil Mitchell two other vans joined the first one and boxed the truck driver in.

"I ran around the corner and there was three vans, one parked in front of the truck and one behind the truck and one on the side of the truck. They seemed to have him blocked in," he said.

"They all ran to the cab and pulled him out of his truck and they were hitting him in the street and one of the guys was hitting his truck."

Andrew said once police arrived they were also attacked.

"The police threw two of them on the ground and started arresting them. Then the other four guys started attacking the police," he said.

"They got really aggressive with the police and the police sort of threatened them with capsicum spray.

"There would've been at least six guys. They looked like they all worked for the same company."

The driver told media at the scene: "I'm all right. Road rage, just all is it".

The truck driver works for Fred's Interstate Travels, and the company's Victorian operations manager Jye Borg said the driver was doing OK.

"The truck driver is OK at the moment," he said.

A 31-year-old Roxburgh Park man was taken into custody, but has since been released pending further inquries.

There have been no reports of injuries, Leading Senior Constable Jackson said.

It comes as police probe four other road rage incidents in the past week, in which drivers were allegedly forced from the road.

Elten Gevergizyan faced Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged over two alleged weekend attacks – one stretching from Strathmore to Bulla on the Tullamarine Freeway on Saturday and another at Epping on Sunday.

The truck driver is accused of running two schoolteachers off the road then attacking the pair with a hammer on the Tullamarine Freeway before allegedly swapping vehicles and attacking a second couple with a baseball bat.

Watching the court proceedings was John DeMarco whose wife Suzanne was run off the Tullamarine Freeway last Friday by another driver.

He said his wife was approaching Wildwood Road at Bulla when she was tailgated and pushed from the road.

“It’s 60km/h there because of the roadworks,” he said. "We’re decent people, we don’t deserve this."

Mr DeMarco wanted to see Mr Gevergizyan should he be the driver who ran his wife off the road.

Police are yet to lay charges over the incident and The Age does not suggest Mr Gevergizyan was the driver involved.

Also on Saturday, a mother and her young children were terrorised by a violent driver in Sunbury who rammed their car, before forcing open the front passenger door and threatening the woman's 11-year-old daughter with a wooden bollard.

Road rage assaults have jumped by 60 per cent across Victoria in the past four years, growing from 210 to 380 reported cases, according to Crime Statistics Agency data.
