On this night Johns and Steele, dressed like foppish intergalactic cowboys, strut and cavort across that area of the musical landscape, their vocals electronically warped as they chop out guitar riffs over largely abrasive synthesised noise and throbbing rhythms provided by a handful of bandmates in the shadows.

Occasionally something resembling a melody pierces the fug but, really, not very often.

DREAMS have a musician manning three harps, mainly, it seems, because they can afford three harps, and similarly no expense has been spared on the dazzling projections at the back, which feature everything from cool retro arcade games to cheesy modern emoji.

There is experimental daring and something resembling art somewhere in this mess – humour, too, as the two frontmen attempt to teach the audience a goofy dance and Johns gleefully acknowledges the "willing participants in this bullshit" – but it really isn't pretty.

By the time the set climaxes with a rave in hell to a tune that might be called California, not even the familiarity of the closing No One Defeats Us can cleanse the palate.

With DREAMS, Johns and Steele may have managed to approximate the latest sounds roaming around in their brilliant musical minds but it's doubtful many others will enjoy hearing the results as much as they do.

DREAMS play a second and final show for Vivid Live at the Concert Hall on Wednesday May 30.
