Camping festivals have become increasingly costly for music lovers, but as accusations of "cash grabbing" circle around one popular event, another is looking to ease the burden on low-income punters.

Strawberry Fields, a music festival on the banks of the Murray River near Berrigan, NSW, has created a program for people on low incomes to access tickets – usually $330 – at half price.

After testing it out successfully last year, festival director Tara Benney says Strawberry Fields, now in its 10th year, plans to make the scheme permanent as a way to open up the festival experience to people who would otherwise miss out.

"[Festivals] can be transformative for people, whether it's meeting their best friends or falling in love or just seeing things they've never seen before and being inspired by that, and I don't think that experience should be restricted to people who can afford to pay the full cover charge," she said.

Applications for the low-income discount are assessed on a case-by-case basis against a number of criteria, including employment status, concession status and monthly income – all of which must be documented.
