In the knockout rounds George forced another contestant to give her opinion on whether it was fair to go up against Perry before offering his own thoughts.

"This is The Voice and you’re not really a singer," he opined.

Eager to move away from George's critical mind, Perry and his coach Rowland opted to prove that he has got a voice and opened his live performance of Madonna's Like A Prayer without his vocal station.

The results were impressive with coaches Joe Jonas and Delta Goodrem both commending him on his excellent vocal.

But Boy George had feelings and he needed to talk about them.

"My worry is that you're going so far away from your original blind audition. Almost losing who you are, that's the only thing I'm worried about," he said.

"You are so cool. One of the coolest acts that's been on this show. Don't lose that coolness."

Rowland wasn't letting him get off that easy and demanded he explain what he mean.

"If you go on YouTube you watch your videos, you build a landscape," George said.

"When you go live you paint a picture, when you are forced... you're forced to speed it up, you don't get the full value of what you do. I think you understand."

With the backhanded compliment out of the way, the focus then turned to whether George had said Perry needed to sing.

"Actually I never ever told you to sing," George said. "You play me back, 'You need to sing,' I'll give you $1000 in cash. I know what I said. What I said was - I did say you weren't a singer, that was wrong of me, I admit that. I didn't say you have to sing."

After questioning Perry's eligibility to be on the show due to his use of looping technology, George then urged him to use it if he remains for another week.

"If you're still here next week, go loopy, baby," he said.

With the power now handed over the audience it was down to a public vote as to whether he would continue through to compete for another week.

And with his popularity only growing week by week it was an easy slide into the next stage of the competition with Brock Ashby and Jacinta Gulisano being forced into a sing-off to decide who would be going home.

In the end it was the end of Ashby's time on the show.

The Voice live finals continue next Sunday at 7pm.
