Reinvention after their teen years was inevitable and here it saw them delving into confessional tracks on love and fame with incisive and mature flair.

Opening with 2014 breakout track She Looks So Perfect paved the way for a barrage of anthems including the edgy Girls Talk Boys and angsty She's Kinda Hot.

Even unreleased tracks such as the soul-sodden Valentine, the funky Moving Along and Lie to Me, with its lighter falsettos, were met with such a barrage of screams and singing it was at times difficult to hear the performance.

This show was a stop on a promotional tour, so the set flashed by in less than an hour. But 5SOS nonetheless proved they are a cohesive unit and as technically proficient on their instruments as their heroes Good Charlotte and Green Day.

Frontman Luke Hemmings' vocals moved between suave and delicate in the verses to smokier, more authoritative territory in the explosive choruses.

This balance between light and shade is one of the band's greatest strengths, further evident in the pensive, acoustic-driven Amnesia, the slick electro-pop of Youngblood and the infectious closer Want You Back.

That last one seemed somewhat fitting, what with the buzz around the coming album and a "proper" tour taking place later this year: there's no doubt Sydney will welcome 5SOS back with open arms.
