American actor Jason Silva narrates this chronicle of our species' evolution as if he is giving a TED Talk, with passion and precision. We watch much of it as if from the wings of such a speech. Despite the graphic dramatisations which, in the first of these episodes, depict bloody battles, this technique gives the unnerving sense that there might be a test afterwards. After all the gore, he moves on in the second episode to architecture.

THE PIZZA SHOW

Pizzeria owner Frank Pinello takes us on a backstreets tour of the real New York. Serious about serving slices the old-fashioned way, with a handful of simple, homemade ingredients instead of with all the toppings with which he says "Americanised" pizzas are laden, Pinello is a delight. He even treats us to the travellers' holy grail by inviting us to a family dinner at his grandmother's Brooklyn home.
