POLICE have established a crime scene after the body of an unidentified woman has washed up on North Cronulla Beach this morning.
Her body was discovered by a passer- around 5am today.
It is understood the woman was fully clothed when she was found this morning. Locals at the scene said The Shire community was in shock and tensely wondering about the woman’s identity.
“Being The Shire, whether we know them or someone we know does ... The Shire is small, it would be weird if we hadn’t heard of them,” local resident Kate Beudeker said.
The body washed up just metres from the beach’s busy promenade with morning joggers stunned at the police find.
“It’s a big shock to wake up to in the morning,” Jordan Moore said.
Lazaros Theodoridis arrived for work on a building site opposite the scene at 6am, to see a major police search underway around where the woman was found.
“The police were searching all the way along the beach ... It’s a real shock to everyone,” Mr Theodoridis said.
“If it were a drowning, why would police walk all the way along, left and right.”
The woman’s body was covered in a forensics tent immediately after it was found, then at 7.30am the woman’s carried the body about 300m south along the beach and into an ambulance.
A post mortem examination will be conducted to determine the direction of inquiries.
Inquiries are continuing. No further details are known at this time.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
