A man has been hit and killed by a garbage truck at Redfern.

The fatality took place about 8am on Bourke Lane, off Zamia St.

Police and paramedics found the man critically injured. He was treated at the scene but was unable to be revived.

His age is not known at this stage and he is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the vehicle, a man believed to be aged in his 30s, will be taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers from Crash Investigation Unit will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore was advised of the incident this morning and attended the scene to speak with detectives before addressing media.

“We have a tragic situation in Redfern today,” the Lord Mayor said.

“We have a rough sleeper who has died in a back lane here in Redfern and we would have a very shattered council garbage truck driver and staff who are with him.”

Ms Moore said it was a “very sad situation” and that police would now focus their efforts on determining how the accident occurred, the identity of the deceased man and contacting his family to inform them of his unfortunate passing.

There are significant traffic implications with buses delayed up to 15 minutes.

Redfern Police and detectives are also on scene speaking to witnesses with a tarpaulin used on Bourke Lane to shield the public from the grisly scene.

“You just hope it’s no one you know,” a shocked jogger said. “This is a real family area with lots of kids — it’s so worrying.”

It is the 29th pedestrian fatality this year.

MORE TO COME

It comes after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a bus in Sydney’s north on the weekend.

The man, who has not been formally identified, was struck by the bus as he crossed Bridge Road in Hornsby on Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses gave the man first aid until paramedics arrived but he died at the scene, police say.
