The Living Room

Watching lifestyle talk show The Living Room feels a bit like travelling back to a time when what you watched on telly was whatever happened to be on. In that dim, distant past, if there was nothing much on the box, you might well spend a harmless 45 minutes watching a DIY enthusiast transforming an old cardigan into a decorative toilet-roll cover. As things stand – with more excellent TV ready to be watched at any moment than anyone could ever hope to get through – it's hard to understand how shows like The Living Room find an audience. There's just no reason to bother with bland lifestyle programming. Host Amanda Keller, who is smart and sharp in everything she does, deserves better. Louise Schwartzkoff

Love & Mercy (2015)

The highs and lows of Brian Wilson, the Californian songwriter who in the 1960s was the only true rival to Lennon and McCartney, get dual representation in Bill Pohlad's bluntly effective pop music redemption tale. The young Wilson, who makes teenage symphonies in the recording studio for his band the Beach Boys, is played with painful innocence by Paul Dano, while the 1980s iteration, played by John Cusack, is not so much recovering from mental illness as being held in its grip by his unscrupulous psychiatrist, Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). An artist's rise and fall is a staple of the biopic genre, but Love & Mercy is invested with a terrific understanding of the creative spirit and the mysteries of the studio – the strands from a young Wilson's recording session can emerge as a completed classic. It's Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks) who saves Wilson, but music is his true companion. Craig Mathieson
