DURING a career spanning almost 25 years – including the past 10 at P&O Cruises Australia – Sture Myrmell has carved out a niche as one of the most experienced execs in the industry.
Now in the top job of Carnival Australia president, Sture’s job sees him take about 30 flights a year to a dozen or so countries – alongside plenty of cruises, of course.
MY TOP PACKING HACK IS …
Bring two different pairs of trousers and different accessories for one jacket – that gives you two different outfits for half the space.
MY PACKING STYLE IS …
Routine and familiar – it helps take the stress out of travel. I normally pack the night before and determine the number of different “outfits” needed and then pack them in the same order that I always do. It also makes it easier to find things, so you don’t have to rummage through your entire case to find something.
I PACK FOR A TRIP BY …
Checking the weather. It’s a good idea to do this before you pack. And if I have three days of meetings and no time off, then there’s little point in packing casual wear. I try to never pack “options”. I choose what I’m going to wear before I pack, not when I get there, thus avoiding overpacking.

MY ESSENTIALS FOR A CRUISE …
A mix of styles. Something casual and comfortable for during the day, something smart for cocktails and dinner at night-time, and then, of course, a pair of swimmers.
MY TOP CARRY-ON TIP IS …
To make it as light as possible, especially if you have a long-haul flight with connections – it’ll make that long trek between terminals a lot easier.
MY LUGGAGE IS …
I used to have a garment-style suitcase that I travelled with for years – it weighed a tonne even when it was empty and must have cost me a small fortune in excess luggage charges. Thankfully, I now have a super light suitcase on wheels, and for my carry-on I take a beaten-up Kenneth Cole leather shoulder bag.
MY OUTFIT WHEN I TRAVEL …
Smart-casual. I’ll wear at least a suit jacket and a pair of shoes – both of which I’ll use at the destination to reduce the amount of stuff to pack.
I NEVER BOARD A FLIGHT WITHOUT …
A book. I find long hauls to be a great opportunity to get uninterrupted and focused reading time. I also always have my laptop and a notebook and pen as I like to play around with my thoughts and ideas on paper.
WASH BAG STAPLES INCLUDE …
Boring basics – a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, razor, hair clippers and aftershave.
BIGGEST PACKING MISTAKE …
Taking someone else’s suitcase. I didn’t realise until I got to the hotel.
MY GO-TO TRAVEL APP IS …
TripCase. I love it as it gives me easy access to all my flight details.
MY PACKING RESOLUTION IS …
To do a long-haul flight without any luggage – to simply board with the clothes I’m wearing, my passport, credit card and phone and then pick up whatever I need along the way.
