The weather bureau's rain gauge in Melbourne has been filled with 17 millimetres of water - that's more than in drank in during the entire month of April. 

The state's highest rainfall total was at Mortlake, which received 44 millimetres over the past 24 hours, while the most rain in Melbourne fell at The Basin in the city's east, which recorded 30 millimetres.
