Royal Blood
Hordern Pavilion, April 24
★★★★

For those about to rock, we play disco. At 9.06pm the crowd started baying for Royal Blood, the British drum and bass guitar heavy blues duo who thrive in the gap we never knew existed between The White Stripes and The Black Keys.

Royal Blood's Ben Thatcher and Mike Kerr.

Royal Blood's Ben Thatcher and Mike Kerr.

They sauntered on stage to KC and the Sunshine Band's Get Down Tonight. There was barely enough time to consider what this incongruous choice said about trolls and their outsize influence on the world before Mike Kerr's booming bass turned disco into inferno.

Where Are You Now? – yanked from midway through last year's album How Did We Get So Dark? – proved a blast as an opener, and the pit was soon moshing for the raucous single Lights Out.

From the outset Kerr, on lead vocals and a bass he used as a lead instrument, and drummer Ben Thatcher were in tight control. Being a duo means fewer moving parts to synchronise, but it becomes more obvious when something goes wrong.
