Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu has made history by becoming the first artist to top the ARIA charts while singing in an Indigenous language.
The late singer-songwriter, who was born blind, sang in a number of Yolngu languages as well as English. The Yolngu language family hails from northeast Arnhem Land and has around 4500 speakers.
Yunupingu's fourth album, Djarimirri, debuted at number one on the ARIA charts over the weekend – ahead of Ed Sheeran's ÷, The Greatest Showman soundtrack and Kylie Minogue's Golden.
Djarimirri means "child of the rainbow". It is also the name of the fourth track on the album the legendary singer recorded just weeks before his death.
Yunupingu died in July 2017 after a long battle with liver and kidney disease. His death sent shockwaves through the Australian music industry, with many remembering him as the voice of a generation.
