A PERTH food truck owner has died after failing to wake from a fortnight-long coma following a scooter crash in Thailand.

Ben French broke his spine, all his ribs and suffered a serious brain injury on March 28 when he crashed while holidaying on the popular tourist island of Koh Samui.

The 36-year-old’s condition deteriorated on Saturday after he was flown to Royal Perth Hospital. The public had raised nearly $100,000 to cover his medical bills.

Mr French died early on Tuesday, Royal Perth Hospital confirmed. His family thanked those who had supported Ben since the accident via a statement from the hospital.

“We cannot find the words to thank people enough for the support they have given Ben and our families during this difficult time,” they said.

“Thank you to all the people who have given generous financial support to bring Ben home to be with his family in Perth. Without this support we would not have been able to bring Ben home.

“We also thank the people who have supported us emotionally through this time, through kind words and by expressing their love for Ben.”

His sister Chelsea French also shared the devastating news on Facebook:

Ben was described as “a kind-hearted, adventurous, hardworking and loving son, brother and friend” on the fundraising page Go Fund Me.

He had ventured to Thailand “on what was meant to be a break from reality ... when suddenly things turned for the worst”.
