Darwin’s NT News is famous for its provocative and funny headlines.

The Australian Top End paper’s finest moment came six years ago with “Why I’ve Got A Cracker Up My Clacker”, explaining why a man who ended up in hospital with serious burns lit a firework shoved between the cheeks of his backside.

It won then-deputy editor Paul Dyer a Walkley Award for headline of the year

The paper reprised the line a few years later as “Why I’ve Got A Packer Up My Clacker” after James Packer and former Nine boss David Gyngell had a fight outside the billionaire’s Sydney home.

Today’s effort is another winner, featuring a photo of Australian opener Cameron Bancroft staring down his pants beside the headline “Why I’ve Got Some Sticky Near My Dicky”.

The Australian opener used tape to attempt to scuff the ball during the 3rd Test in South Africa in a cheating scandal that’s sent shockwaves through cricket and seen captain Steve Smith banned from the 4th Test.

The paper has created another viral hit with the headline shared nearly 5,700 times on Facebook, and retweeted more than 2,300 times on Twitter. And it looks set to surpass last August’s “Do It Now” front page about same-sex marriage, which reached more than 2 million people and set the record for the most viewed front page in Australian history.

The backstory to how the headline was written is also a corker, with the NT News revealing an earlier version was headlined “Balls On The Line”.

The front page was sent to the paper’s editor, Matt Williams and editor Ken McGregor’s, who were with their young kids at bowling alley and started kicking around ideas.

McGregor, a 152 game AFL player for the Adelaide Crows, came up with another NT News headline that will go down in history.
