The opulent halls of Baselworld — the world’s largest watch fair — are, unsurprisingly, dominated by Swiss luxury brands. But in their midst lies Seiko, Japan’s premier watchmaker, with a strong collection of accessible watches, with everything from diver to dress. Here are our five picks.

Seiko Prospex SPB077

A modern reinterpretation of a Seiko dive watch from 1968, this robust 44mm steel number is every inch the classic, with a bold geometric case and exceptionally legible black dial. It looks the part on land or sea. $1600

Seiko Prospex SRPC91K

If you like a dive watch with a little colour, how about this blue-dialled beauty? Housed in the popular ‘turtle’ style case, the dial is an incredible gradient blue, inspired by the blue whale. And the marine theme isn’t coincidence; this watch, and part of the funds from its sale, goes towards saving the ocean. $725

Seiko Premier Automatic SSA374J

This year, Seiko designed their first ever mechanical watch for their ambassador Novak Djokovic. In rich rose gold tones, the open heart looking into the movement is intended to represent a tennis ball, and the lattice-like dial a racquet. Game, set, match. $1200

Seiko Presage SPB073

What sets this classically styled Presage watch apart is the dial. It’s made of Shippo enamel, a special Japanese type of enamel that has been polished after being fired at 800 degrees Celsius. The result is incredibly rich and lustrous. $2300

Seiko Astron SSE167

The Astron is pretty cutting-edge tech. It’s a GPS-equipped, solar-powered piece of kit that can pretty much do anything. This latest executive sports series model adds 200 metres of water resistance to the equation. So now it can go anywhere too. $4200
