Lexus is planning to build a 20-metre (65-foot) yacht as Toyota’s luxury car brand turns its attention to the water.

Toyota Marine is nearly 30 years old and one of Japan’s largest premium yachts manufacturers under the Ponam brand, which ranges from 8-9 metre (26-30ft) sports fishing boats to larger cabin-cruisers.

The Lexus yacht concept was first revealed 12 months ago as a 13-metre (42-foot) long concept, but the production version, scheduled for construction in the second half of 2019, is 50% larger as a 20-metre (65-foot) sport fly-bridge cruiser with luxury staterooms below deck and entertaining space for up to 15 guests.

The hull, inner structure and superstructure of the Lexus Sport Yacht will be made from hand-laid carbon-fibre fabric, vacuum-infused with two-part polyurethane resin. Twin marine versions of the engine in the Lexus RC F coupe and LC 500 grand tourer – a 5.0-litre V8 engine – will power the vessel.

Toyota executive vice president Shigeki Tomoyama said the boat will also include a range of high-tech features found in a land-bound Lexus, such as smartphone integration, and remote diagnostics.

“We’ve decided to take the next bold step of producing an all-new larger yacht that builds on the advanced nature of the concept while adding more comfort and living space,” he said.

Full specifications, pricing and other details will be announced later this year.
