There is a synchronicity in the air as Santos heads into Saturday’s Golden Slipper for Gai Waterhouse.
Six times previously, the Slipper has fitted for Waterhouse-prepared runners – Ha Ha, Dance Hero, Sebring, Overreach, Pierro and Vancouver. It is a Golden Slipper training record she shares with her father, Tommy Smith.
“He has barrier seven for seven Golden Slippers,” Waterhouse said. “The numbers are working out. “It is the perfect draw for him and exactly what we wanted when we came here. He has the barrier - now we just had a bit of luck, like always in the Golden Slipper.”
Santos remains an $8 chance after drawing to the outside of favourites Written By and Sunlight, which will push forward from gates four and five respectively.
Waterhouse will be looking for her first Golden Slipper in partnership with Adrian Bott on Saturday and believes the I Am Invincible colt can continue his autumn winning streak after taking the Pierro Plate and Skyline Stakes and follow in the hoofprints of her other colts to win the stallion-making race.
