A TOP END pub and its bottle-o had a spike in sales with thirsty residents seeking shelter from tropical Cyclone Marcus and the heat that followed.

The Beachfront Hotel in Nightcliff survived the weather without too much damage and didn’t lose power.

As a result, owner Guy Dunne said the hotel was full of people looking for electricity, a feed and a drink.

“People were obviously looking for supplies, water and ice were hot items,” he said.

“I think people were definitely caught unaware of how intense (Marcus) would be.”

Mr Dunne said it was important for the hotel to be open for people who were without power, water and shelter.

“The real Territory spirit was on display — our staff was working hard and they had busy shifts, making sure people got what they needed,” he said.

The hotel opened on Saturday afternoon, and its bottleshop was one of the few in Darwin open on Sunday.

“It was very busy, definitely a flat out day for us — there were heaps of phone calls from people whose power had gone out,” he said.

“I haven’t looked at the figures yet, but it could be (bigger than New Year’s).”

Despite its escape from serious damage, Cyclone Marcus still left its mark on the hotel.

“Our only casualty was our old fig tree. Luckily it only fell onto our toilet block and not the main building.”
