But Berejiklian has a looming political battle ahead over her decision to spend a sizeable chunk of money on two new sporting stadiums in Sydney. There is money set aside to pay for it, yet she and her sports minister, Stuart Ayres, are seemingly struggling to convince voters that this big spend is what NSW needs.

And now, worryingly for her, it seems she is also struggling to convince her own people that this can fly. With 12 months until an election, there are some coalition MPs who know they could well be without a job come March next year. Indeed, Ayres is one of those most likely to lose his seat.

Ayres, a junior minister and down at 17th spot on the cabinet list, is getting his colleagues offside. They think he is throwing his weight around and committing to money he has no power to spend.

With just 12 months to go, Berejiklian needs a united team. She needs her MPs with her, not against her. She needs to show she is indeed different to Baird. She must consult and compromise. She must calm the nerves of her government.

If she doesn’t, the stadiums debacle will be the beginning of a narrative of a government who cannot sell its message while anxious MPs snipe in the background.
