The family of a 23-year-old man killed in a jet ski crash in WA’s Pilbara region says it’s struggling to comprehend how he died.

Kyle Staats was with a group of friends at the abandoned Atlas Iron Pardoo mine site yesterday afternoon when his jet ski crashed into another.

He died as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the other jet ski, a man in his 40s, wasn’t injured.

In a statement to 9NEWS, Mr Staats' family said their world won’t be the same without him.

“He brightened everybody’s day and touched the hearts of everyone he met,” the statement read.

“We feel like this is a terrible nightmare that we can’t wake up from… He will be dearly missed.”

The family is yet to be told how the crash unfolded.

South Hedland Police are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.
