A wannabe race car driver may well have set a new – albeit unenviable – record in Melbourne.

It wasn't for the speed of his driving, however, but the amount of time it took him to lose his car.

The 37-year-old Yallambie man bought the 2013 Porsche Cayenne and filmed himself driving more than double the speed limit along Melbourne's Grand Prix Circuit.

Within about 10 minutes of buying the car he had been pulled over by police who impounded his brand-new vehicle.

Police say he was driving 100km/h in a 40km/h zone along Albert Park's Aughtie Drive on Saturday morning.
