An 88-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being struck by a car at Bankstown, in Sydney’s south-west.

The man was struck by a white Toyota as he crossed the road at a roundabout on the corner of Eldridge Road and Northram Avenue at 7.30pm last night.

The Bankstown resident, who uses a walking frame, slowly approached the intersection and takes several steps onto the road.

A white Toyota can then be seen approaching the roundabout at speed before allegedly ploughing into the man.

The driver appears to momentarily stop, before allegedly speeding away.

CCTV vision shows the elderly man being hit by the car before sliding to the ground, as shocked witnesses watch-on.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics, before being transported to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition, which has since been downgraded to stable.

Local residents have told 9NEWS the victim was diagnosed with dementia, lived alone and would often walk to the shops to buy vanilla slice and milk.

A 24-year-old man has since been arrested. 

Police investigations continue.
