Police are investigating if foul play led to a woman plunging to her death from a Gold Coast balcony overnight.

Detectives have set up a crime scene and forensic officers are combing the apartment complex on Palm Meadows Drive in Carrara, after being called to the scene around 3am.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said it was still too early to determine whether the 32-year-old's death is suspicious.

9NEWS understands the woman's partner was taken to hospital after being sedated by paramedics at the scene.
