TRAINER Kris Lees has declared Reach For Heaven and Japanese import Hallelujah Boy as the best of his four runners in Saturday’s Hawkesbury qualifier, aiming to secure the two berths on offer in next month’s $500,000 Provincial Championship Final at Royal Randwick.

Lees won the first of the Provincial Championship qualifiers held at Wyong last Saturday, with Just Dreaming beating the Kim Waugh-trained Manhattan Mist — both of whom go through to the Final.

CUMMINGS’ STARS READY TO RUMBLE

Lees saddled up eight of the 15 runners in the 2016 Provincial Championships Final — including the winner, Danish Twist and runner-up Powerline. Another of his Newcastle army, Zestful, was fourth.

Joining Reach For Heaven and Hallelujah Boy in Saturday’s “prelim” are the Alan Bell-owned Bastia and Jeff Penza’s mount, Clevanicc.

Savabeel’s son Reach For Heaven is the shortest of the Lees’ quartet, priced as a $4.40 equal TAB Fixed Odds favourite with the Kim Waugh-trained Uptown Lad.

“It was a strong win at Rosehill last Wednesday and he has come through it in good order. He has got a soft gate so he certainly looks to get the right type of run,’’ Lees said.

“He’s probably the pick of mine but I do expect Hallelujah Boy to run a very good race fresh.

“I have been quite pleased with his work since his trials and he’s been ready to go for a while. I think seven furlongs (1400m) suits him first-up.

“Bastia is certainly not without a chance. He didn’t beat much first-up last preparation but he won very comfortably at Port Macquarie and then he went straight to city class and was competitive in his next two runs.

“Cleavanicc is a $25 or $50 chance but he ran well first-up. He’ll be back and he’ll have last crack at them.’’

Lees nominated co-favourite Uptown Lad and Great Job as the main threats to his bunch.

Both of those horses will need to overcome wide draws. Uptown Lad is in gate 14, while the Tracey Bartley-trained Great Job will jump from the extreme outside alley in the field of 16.

“I am bit disheartened (by the draw) but what are you going to do, they are the cards you’re dealt so you’ve got to go with them,’’ Bartley said. “He’ll roll forward and if they go silly, he’ll let them go and slot in fourth or fifth.

“He could end up outside the leader, it just depends on how fast they go.’’

Great Job has won four of his five starts, including his past three in succession. He put the writing on the wall for a big performance today beating Lees’ pair Progression and Le Romain in a 1000m trial at Gosford last month.

SHAYNE O’CASS’S BEST BETS

HAWKESBURY

BEST BET: VAISHALI (Race 1, No. 4)

A daughter of Sepoy out of the bonny mare Republic Lass whose foals include South African G1 winner, The Conglomerate. Vaishali is a Chris Waller-trained, Chad Lever-ridden, 3YO who was very good at Kembla before a spell and trialled super on February 15.

NEXT BEST: BALTIC SUCCESS (Race 4, No. 3)

Is another one that avid trial watchers will have been waiting for. This Bjorn Baker-trained son of Exceed And Excel won heats at Kembla and Gosford last month in the style that would win most midweekers in town.

VALUE: LADY ELIZABETH (Race 5, No. 9)

Is from the prolific Jason Coyle stable. This typical Magic Albert mare gets back but has a powerful finish. This circuit should really play to her strengths.
