According to the New York Post James Eric Davis Jr., a 19-year-old second year student at the university, was spotted on a train passing through the campus shortly after midnight, the university said in a statement.

“Law enforcement personnel responded and arrested the suspect without incident,” stated the university’s website.

Davis Jr. had gunned down his parents just after 9am on Friday morning when they came to pick him up for spring break, according to the Detroit Free Press.

AP has since reported that the gun used by Davis was registered to his father.

His father, James Eric Davis Sr, 47, was a police officer and an Illinois National Guard veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His mother, Diva Davis, also 47, was a real estate broker, according to her Facebook page. She had also been a flight attendant and was breast cancer survivor.

The shooting led to an hours-long manhunt that included more than 100 police officers, some heavily armed in camouflage uniforms, as panic spread across the campus.

The university president thanked the community and law enforcement for helping to catch the suspect.

Reports on social media, according to the Count, suggest that the student and his parents were arguing over money prior to the murder.

According to a social media poster, “Eric was upset that they asked him to take out a student loan” and he allegedly murdered his parents because they could no longer afford to pay his university fees as they needed to plan for their own retirement.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Davis Jr was a “good kid” and people who knew the family said they saw no signs of trouble with the teen. Lieutenant Larry Klaus of the campus Police Department said Davis Jr had been taken to a hospital on Thursday night by campus police because of a drug-related health problem — possibly an overdose — but authorities did not elaborate.

Jordan Murphy, a friend of the family, said, “Junior was a very respectful man, raised by upstanding parents, who would do anything to protect him and his siblings.”
