A CANBERRA businessman has been criticised by animal rights activists after he was pictured posing next to a dead baboon dressed up in a hat and sunglasses.

Nick Haridemos was the vice president of the Hellenic Club in Canberra, but he has resigned his position following backlash over the controversial pictures.

The Canberra Timesrecently published photos of Mr Haridemos posing next to a variety of exotic animals he killed while on African hunting trips.

The images are believed to have been taken between 2010 and 2016 during organised safaris and were originally posted on a public Photobucket account as well as an online forum where hunters discuss their kills.

The Photobucket account, belonging to user nickha1, uploaded photos of Mr Haridemos standing next to dead elephants, water buffaloes, hyenas and warthogs.

“Absolutely funny as hell!” nickha1 wrote next to the photo of Mr Haridemos smiling in the car next to the slain baboon.

“The new driver gig was a blast … We did a video clip with Blake wired into the microphone talking and we actually drove off!”

Other photos uploaded in 2016 show the Canberra man holding a gun and standing next to a dead elephant in Namibia and posing with chunks of ivory.

“It is truly the place to hunt the biggest ivory in Africa, especially with Botswana now closed,” the user wrote.

The photos caused major outrage online, with people even threatening to boycott the Hellenic Club until he resigns.

Mr Haridemos did not deny posting the pictures, but he did respond to the backlash through a statement from his lawyer.

“Mr Haridemos has, on occasions, engaged in the activity of ‘conservation hunting’,” his lawyer told The Canberra Times.

“This is a regulated activity, which is undertaken in accordance with licences and quotas issued by the relevant country, and is conducted in a manner that does not pose a threat to any endangered species.”
