Peter Dutton is preparing to pitch his vision for a "safer, more secure Australia" in his first major speech since taking on the new Home Affairs mega-portfolio.

Mr Dutton - who has been given ministerial responsibility for Australia's immigration, border, law enforcement and domestic security agencies - will deliver the National Press Club address on Wednesday.

It is understood security measures at the Canberra venue will be beefed up for his address.
