The driver of car allegedly responsible for ploughing through schoolchildren and a parent Melbourne’s south-east has now been charged with dozens of offences.
Michelle Nash, 35, was waiting for a green man at a traffic crossing in on Friday afternoon when she saw the ute coming straight towards them.
“The first thing I tried to do was get up to look for the kids, but I couldn't move, physically move,” Ms Nash told 9NEWS.
Ms Nash said she remembers being hit and projected into the air on impact at a main intersection near St Clare's Primary School.
“I looked to my right and the car was coming over the path where we were - and then I remember being hit and flown,” she said.
When she regained consciousness she could hear children screaming while desperately asking bystanders where her two girls - Tayla and Chelsea, aged nine and seven – were.
The girls were taken to hospital after the incident, along with another five injured schoolchildren.
Another mother, Dannii, compared the scene to a “bombsite”.
“(There were) bodies everywhere and I thought 'oh no, I could have lost both my babies on Friday'.”
Police arrested the 21-year-old man allegedly behind the wheel of the ute yesterday and have since charged him with 41 offences including theft of motor vehicle, speed in a manner dangerous, reckless conduct causing serious injury and unlicensed driving.
He will appear in court later today.
“It's obviously very distressing incident for all people involved - but the community can be assured that there is no further threat,” Detective Senior Sergeant Melissa Nixon said.
