Thousands of homes have lost power and a school has received damage from wild overnight storms in south-east Queensland.

A large tree has fallen at Montville State School, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, but the school expects the clean-up to be completed by Monday.

Just after midnight, 13,177 Energex customers in Brisbane and Moreton Bay lost power as lightning struck the regions.

Up to 3831 Sunshine Coast customers later lost power, Energex tweeted.

By 1.20pm today AEST, 689 Sunshine Coast customers, 269 Moreton Bay Regional customers, and 91 Noosa customers remained without power.

Yesterday, the Bureau of Meteorology warned of large hail and damaging winds, after storms were detected near Kooralbyn, Yarraman, Nanango and Lamington National Park.

The BoM said the thunderstorms were moving towards the north to north-east and were set to affect Boonah, Beaudesert, Laravale, Nanango, Canungra, Harrisville and Haden.

Further storms are forecast for Brisbane today, with showers expected from Monday to Friday.
