THE father of a 16-year-old boy shot by Queensland police has broken down in tears as he faced court charged with assaulting the teen.

Police charged the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, this morning with three counts of assault over the incident at his Springfield home on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers had been called to the house, southwest of Brisbane, with reports of a domestic disturbance allegedly involving the 43-year-old and his son.

The responding officers shot the boy in the torso after he allegedly approached them with a knife. He was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Appearing in Ipswich Magistrates Court briefly today, wearing a green prison jumper and jeans, the father appeared visibly upset, breaking into tears on several occasions as his case was dealt with.

Police opposed bail but bail was granted on several conditions including that the man not approach the 16-year-old or return to the Springfield address. His case was adjourned to March 9.

“Do you understand these conditions?” the magistrate asked.

The man responded: “Yes, Your Honour. As long as my boy’s alive and breathing that’s all that matters to me.”

The 43-year-old later said he was “the luckiest man alive” after being granted bail.

“I thank God, Allah, whatever his name is, that I still have a son that’s alive,” he said.

The Ethical Standards Command is continuing its investigation into the actions of the police officers during the incident.
