A SUSPICIOUS package has been declared safe by bomb squad detectives, but several Melbourne CBD streets remain closed as bomb squad detectives continue their investigation.

Parts of Lonsdale and Russell streets came to a standstill as bomb squad detectives investigated a suspicious package found on Russell Street this evening.

The small suspicious package was found next to parked cars near the QV department store.

Surrounding residents and businesses were evacuated, including the QV1 apartment building.

Bomb squad detectives used a bomb disposal unit to examine the package, which was found near parked cars in the middle of the street.

Images of the package show an Apple branded box, however it is not clear what was inside.

Despite the area being deemed safe, a heavy police presence remains on the scene as a precaution.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler said police were conducting “safety checks” after the package was discovered.

Ambulance and MFB crews were also on the scene.

It’s understood emergency crews will continue to investigate the scene into the night.

VicRoads also issued a traffic alert that warning drivers to avoid the area.

“Vic Police has closed northbound lanes at Bourke St. Traffic being diverted,” the alert said.

A number of people have tweeted saying they have been blocked by the closures, including one who was stuck in QV shopping centre’s Officeworks store.
