Top laptop battery life performers

The most important feature for many laptop shoppers is battery life, and rightly so.

Based on the extensive battery testing conducted in the CNET Labs, these are the 25 PCs with the longest battery-life scores that we've seen over 2017-2018. This list includes Windows and MacOS laptops, Windows two-in-one hybrids, and Chromebooks running Google's Chrome OS. Not included are Android or iOS tablets.

The specific test used here streams a private video over Wi-Fi on an endless loop. Note that these scores reflect the specific configurations we tested, and that screen resolution and CPU choice are some of the major factors that affect battery life.

One of our favorite new laptops, this high-end 2-in-1 ran for 13 hours and 9 minutes (799 minutes total), despite being very thin and adding a new, more-powerful processor in its latest version.

This excellent Chromebook previously held the top spot on our list at 782 minutes, which is 13 hours and 2 minutes.

A new addition, this high-end version of Lenovo's Yoga 2-in-1 ran for 12:50, or 770 minutes.

This 15-inch super-slim laptop impressed us with very long battery life at 12:16.

The popular XPS 13 from Dell ran for 12:16, in a version with a standard FHD screen (a 4K version ran for less time). A redesign of this system was recently announced, and we look forward to testing it.

The latest X1 Carbon, a professional laptop, ran for an impressive 11:50, or 710 minutes, making this the highest-scoring business laptop on the list.

The previous version of this Microsoft hybrid, which has an extra battery in its keyboard base, ran for 709 minutes, or 11:49. The newer Surface Book 2 ran for even longer in initial testing, but we found it to have inconsistent battery life scores over time, so we're not including it here.

The best MacBook is now the 13-inch Pro, without the OLED Touch Bar, at 696 minutes, or 11:36. The 15-inch Pro was only slightly behind.

HP's x360 version of the EliteBook, another business laptop, ran for 694 minutes, even with a powerful Core i7 processor. A newer version, the EliteBook x360 1020 G2, with a built-in privacy screen, was not as impressive, and failed to make the top 25.

LG's lightweight Gram 13 ran for 690 minutes, which used to be a Top 5 score, but no longer.

The latest generation of MacBooks haven't changed much, but the 15-inch model has a huge battery, which helped it run for 10:43 (643 minutes).

The newer third-gen 12-inch MacBook was essentially tied, coming in at 626 minutes, or 10:26. It has a lower-power processor, but also a much smaller battery.

Lenovo's Flex line is one of our favorite value brands. This is an excellent budget hybrid with impressive battery life at 10 hours and 23 minutes.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop also has excellent battery life, despite a thin design and high-res screen. It ran for 621 minutes, or 10:21.

The ever-so-slightly updated MacBook Air is still a battery champ at 10 hours and 10 minutes.

This slim, biz-ready Toshiba ran for 610 minutes, or 10:10.

The first version of the revamped MacBook Pro used a big battery and redesigned hardware to run for 608 minutes, or 10:08. Just a few months later, a 2017 version added about a half hour to that runtime.

Adding a Touch Bar and a more powerful processor to the 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro gets you battery life of 607 minutes. Basically, every current MacBook, and a couple of previous versions, made the list.

HP's 15-inch hybrid shows some real improvement over the 2016 models and ran for 594 minutes. The newer, late-2017 13-inch version was much, much better, however, grabbing the current top spot.

The larger LG Gram is incredibly light, and also a decent battery performer, at 582 minutes, or 9:42. We're currently testing an updated version of this model.

A gaming laptop is a surprise here, but note that despite the graphics chip inside, this is actually a standard mainstream Inspiron with a really big battery, running for 578 minutes. This is the version we tested earlier in 2017. The late-2017 update has a smaller battery and did not make our Top 25 list.

This slightly older version of HP's 13-inch x360 ran for 561 minutes. This is a product line that's been a consistently high performer in the battery department.

Acer's mid-price laptop makes up for what it lacks in looks and style with long battery life (for the price). This is a strong performer at 9:16, or 556 minutes.

Lenovo doesn't mess around when it comes to office laptops, and this no-frills model ran for 555 minutes on its standard battery (plus, an extended battery is also available, which should add another few hours).

The Chromebook Pro is a great all-around budget hybrid and ran for 537 minutes, just three minutes shy of 9 hours. Unlike many Chromebooks with low-power chips, this has a standard Core i5 from Intel, making the battery life even more impressive.
