Valentine’s Day is upon us, and whether you’re planning a fancy night out at your favourite restaurant or flopping onto the couch with single friends, let’s face it, at some point you will be watching a movie.

Wedding Crashers

This early 2000s comedy classic stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as two buddies who have got wedding crashing down to a science. But things get complicated when John (Wilson) falls for Claire (Rachel McAdams) and forces his buddy to make them break all their rules to win her heart.

When Harry met Sally

The deli scene is one of the moment iconic ones in cinematic history. There may not be a line in any movie that’s as instantly recognisable than “I’ll have what she’s having.” Katz’s Deli in New York City where the scene was shot still has a sign hanging above the table that Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal sat at that says “Where Harry met Sally… Hope you have what she had! Enjoy!”

The Apartment

Exploring the concept that the complicated and confusing nature of love doesn’t change over time, this 1960 movie is a comedy of errors that ends on the iconic line, “Shut up and deal.”

He’s Just Not That Into You

Eagle vs. Shark

But things don’t really go to plan as she falls for Nick.

Leap Year

Anna (Amy Adams) is frustrated that after four years together, her boyfriend (Adam Scott) still hasn’t proposed to her. On hearing an Irish tradition where the woman can propose marriage to a man on February 29, (leap day) and the man cannot refuse, she travels to Dublin where is staying while at a conference for work. She hires local Irishman Declan (Matthew Goode) to drive her to him, and while on the way to see her boyfriend, unexpectedly falls for Declan’s Irish charm.

The English Patient

In a series of sad flashbacks during World War II, a badly burned Count László (Ralph Fiennes) lying in hospital recounts an ill-fated love affair with a married woman which ultimately ends in tragedy.

Chocolat

“Sinfully delicious” is the tagline to this delightful film. Juliette Binoche stars as Vianne, a French chocolatier, alongside Alfred Molina as the pious Comte de Reynaud who will do anything in his power to shut down her “sinful” chocolate shop, opened during Lent in a very traditional, small French village.

Looking For Alibrandi

Melina Marchetta’s young adult novel was made into a film in 2000 starring newcomer Pia Miranda and Anthony Lapaglia. It was filmed on location in various areas of Sydney like Glebe, Eddy Avenue at Sydney’s Central station, Scots College and Kincoppal Rose Bay school, as well as the iconic quadrangle of the University of Sydney.

Practical Magic

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman star as sisters and “good” witches in this inventive rom-com. It’s one of those movies that you can watch over and over again.

Blue Is the Warmest Colour

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, the drama follows Adèle’s (Adèle Exarchopoulos) self-discovery, which is helped by meeting and starting a relationship with the blue-haired Emma (Léa Seydoux).

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Blake Edwards’ classic based on the Truman Capote novel stars Audrey Hepburn as New York City socialite Holly Golightly who begins to fall for the new guy (George Peppard) who has moved into her apartment building. Well, after missing some obvious hints first.

Drinking Buddies

Jake Johnson and Olivia Wilde play coworkers at a brewery who spend their days playfully flirting with each other, but after having a double date with their significant others it becomes apparent they should be together and that’s when the problems start.

Hitch

I challenge you not to feel good after watching this movie! Will Smith is at his charming best and it’s probably the best thing Kevin James has ever done.

Meet the Patels

Actor Ravi Patel allows his sister, Geeta, to follow him as he tries to find love the old fashioned way, letting his parents do it. And the traditional Indian way is no joke.

The Proposal

Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock have some serious chemistry in this hilarious comedy where Bullock plays Reynold’s boss who convinces him to pretend to be her fiance to avoid deportation. They start out as strangers, but as they learn more about each other, they both realise they judged each other too quickly and end up falling for each other.

The Notebook

It’s hard to believe this was released fourteen years ago! Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling star as two ridiculously good-looking people experiencing the trouble of falling in love with someone in a different social class in the 1940s. If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favour and watch it. Remember to bring the tissues.

Silver Linings Playbook

Hollywood It-girl Jennifer Lawrence steals the show in this down-to-earth comedy also starring Bradley Cooper, who plays a guy that’s hit rock bottom after losing his wife and job and ends up in rehab. Cooper and Lawrence’s dance at the end of the movie will have you feeling all the feels.

Don Jon

This is a great film that has really flown under the radar. Joseph Gordon Levitt shows his acting versatility in this film where he plays a bodybuilder bizarrely addicted to pornography, to the detriment of his real-life relationships. It’s worth watching this for Scarlett Johansson’s Boston accent alone.

Me Before You

A real tear-jerker, this film stars Emilia Clarke as Lou, who you may know better as Khaleesi from Game of Thrones. Sam Claflin plays opposite her as Will, a wealthy young banker left paralyzed from an accident. Despite the odds, they fall in love, only for Lou to find out that Will has decided on euthanasia to end his pain. Tissues needed.
