The Electoral Commissioner of Queensland will be suspended following serious allegations.
On Monday, the executive council approved a recommendation by Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath to immediately suspend commissioner Walter van der Merwe, pending a show cause notice, as a result of a serious allegation that could amount to misbehaviour under section 25 of the Electoral Act 1992.
Ms D'Ath said the allegations, while serious, did not suggest inappropriate interference in the outcome of elections.
"The public can be assured that the Electoral Commission of Queensland's core obligations continue to be met," Ms D'Ath said.
"They are serious allegations that warranted me taking immediate action and seeking the governor's endorsement to suspend the electoral commissioner as of today as I go through a process and give him the opportunity to respond to those allegations."
