The federal opposition says it will seek answers on the employment arrangements for Barnaby Joyce’s partner, who went to work for other ministers after having an affair with the Deputy Prime Minister.

Joyce and his partner Vikki Campion, a former journalist with Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, are expecting a baby and their relationship, which began as an affair, became public last week.

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek on ABC television today called for “full transparency” from Joyce and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Campion’s job assignments after leaving Joyce’s office.

One position was in the office of resources minister Matt Canavan, while another involved the apparent creation of a new role working for Nationals MP Damian Drum.

“The only area in which there is a genuine public interest is in the area of the expenditure of taxpayer funds and there have been questions over the last couple of days about jobs that have been created for Vikki Campion,” Plibersek said today, adding there were also questions to answer about “the expenditure of tax payer funds on travel”.

Plibersek said: “It does appear that the jobs were created in addition to the jobs that already existed in these offices. They were quite high rates of pay. I think that is something that even the Prime Minister, who has ultimate responsibility for signing off on these things, well, the Deputy Prime Minister ought to answer questions about.”

Finance minister Mathias Cormann later said on Sky News: “All of my advice is that everything was absolutely above board and I am very surprised the Labor Party would go there, I’ve got to tell you.”
