UPDATE 4.30PM: The death of a 39-year-old man in police custody overnight will investigated.
Chief Superintendent Kevin Guteridge said police responded to an incident in Mount Louisa about 1.20am this morning, where they took the man into custody.
“Sadly while that man was in custody, he lost consciousness,” he said.
“An ambulance was present at the scene, paramedics were in attendance and made extensive attempts to try to revive the man but unfortunately he was unable to be revived and he was pronounced deceased at the Townsville Hospital at about 3am this morning as a result of that.”
Chief Superintendant Guteridge said he was unable to comment further on the incident until the investigation was complete.
“Critical to that investigation will be body-worn camera footage that was taken by the police officers that responded this morning,” he said.
“Our thoughts are certainly with the family and police will be supportive of the family and community members through this investigative process and beyond.”
