A private school in Geelong has provided information to the police about complaints relating to former lord mayor Robert Doyle’s time teaching there from 1978 to 1981.

Geelong College principal Peter Miller said on Thursday afternoon that the school had informed Victoria Police about allegations made against Mr Doyle about his time at the school.

Mr Miller said the school “has provided information to the police who will determine whether an official investigation is warranted”.

“The school does not intend to conduct its own investigation,” Dr Miller said.

Mr Miller said that two former students had contacted Geelong College through an independent facilitator the school had appointed to look into other historical matters at the school.

The two students had contacted this facilitator “informing us of their personal experiences of questionable behaviour by Robert Doyle while he was a teacher at the school. The school provided that information to the police”.

Mr Doyle's lawyer Nick Ruskin said on Thursday that his client was "completely unaware of this matter and we have recevied no information about it. Our client remains in hospital".

The Age contacted the college's independent facilitator, Pauline Ryan, but she did not respond. The Age is not suggesting that the concerns raised about Mr Doyle are correct.

Mr Doyle resigned as lord mayor of Melbourne on Monday following a seven-week leave of absence over sexual harassment allegations levelled against him by former Team Doyle councillor Tessa Sullivan.

Mr Doyle, who entered hospital before resigning, has denied all the previous allegations made against him.

The Age sought comment from Victoria Police on the matter. A spokesman said police could not comment on individual cases.
