When chef Jeremy Strode, the talent behind the critically acclaimed Bistrode CBD restaurant, died suddenly in July last year, it sent Sydney’s hospitality industry into a deep shock.
He left behind his wife and kitchen co-collaborator, Jane, their two young boys and his son from a previous marriage, amid the heartbreak to many that a man who gave so tirelessly of himself to so many had gone from their lives.
Strode, 53, had battled mental illness for years and was open about his struggles. One of the strongest and bravest in the industry had lost his fight.
His colleagues called him “The Truth” because of Strode’s openness and the honesty with which he plied his craft.
When they gathered in their hundreds at the ivy to remember his generosity, talent and humour, Merivale CEO Justin Hemmes was among those determined to give thanks for his legacy and ensure his family were looked after.
“Jeremy was such a kind and quietly thoughtful man. He was a friend and mentor to many at Merivale, always so generous in sharing his exceptional talent,” Hemmes said.
Now 14 of Australia’s finest chefs, including World’s 50 Best chef Dan Hunter from Victoria’s Brae, with gather in Sydney next month to return the favour at a fundraising dinner for his family.
The Strode Family Dinner will celebrate the life of one of the county’s best loved chefs, at the ivy ballroom on Tuesday, March 27.
Those donating their time and energy in honour of Strode include Christine Manfield, 4Fourteen’s Colin Fassnidge, est.’s Peter Doyle, Sepia’s Martin Benn, Darren Robertson and Mark Le Brooy of Three Blue Ducks, alongside a host of Merivale chefs including Dan Hong, Danielle Alvarez, Lauren Murdoch and Lorraine Godsmark, with ABC’s Simon Marnie as host.
Tickets for The Strode Family Dinner are $300 each or $3000 for a table of 10, and available online here, with all proceeds raised going to Jane and their boys to support their futures.
