The Indian Pacific Wheel Race, an epic solo cycle race across the country that was due to start next month despite the death of British rider Mike Hall last year, has been cancelled.

Organiser Jesse Carlsson said "potential outcomes" of the inquest into Hall's death, likely to be held later this year, meant calling off the race.

He had previously said the race would be held for the second time from March 17 with the support of Hall's mother and extra safety precautions.

Cyclists were due to take on a 5500-kilometre unsupported ride from Fremantle to the Sydney Opera House, with the leaders expected to take less than 14 days.

"As more information about the potential outcomes of [the inquest] have become clear only very recently, it is with an extremely heavy heart that we cancel the 2018 Indian Pacific Wheel Race with immediate effect," Carlsson said in a statement.

Entry fees will be refunded.

The ultra-endurance race, which required riders to either carry all their food, water and repair supplies or buy them along the route, captured the imagination of so-called "dot watchers" around the country, who followed racers via GPS trackers.

It was called off when Hall, 35, was killed in a collision with a car south of Canberra after riding more than 5000 kilometres in 12 days – averaging more than 400 kilometres a day.

"Mike Hall was a source of inspiration to so many," Carlsson said. "The phrase 'be more Mike' is something many of us have clung to in the weeks and months following his untimely death.

"Revisit that and please channel any of the negative energy associated with the cancellation of the IPWR into something that Mike would be proud of."
