Management of tourism drawcard Sovereign Hill have revealed a history of sexual assault allegations among staff at the outdoor museum in regional Victoria.

Two men have been investigated over sexual misconduct claims in 2016 and 2017, Sovereign Hill Museums Association boss Jeremy Johnson told reporters on Wednesday.

The 2016 claims led to an in-house review.

"That independent investigation led to Sovereign Hill standing down a male employee and taking some disciplinary action, including the provision of a first and final warning," Mr Johnson said.

Accusations about the behaviour of a second staff member in 2017 were revealed on Wednesday with police confirming their involvement.

"The male employee reported in (the latest case) is currently on leave," Mr Johnson said, adding that he would not add more detail because of the police investigation.

Two women at Sovereign Hill alleged the staff member of acts including groping and exposure.

"Police are investigating a number of allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct at a Ballarat business in 2017," spokeswoman Natalie Butler said in a statement.

The museum has fallen short of its duty to provide workers with a safe workplace, the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance said.

The union has represented several members who worked at Sovereign Hill and were unsurprised by the claims.

"We commend the bravery of these women for taking a stand against sexual harassment and assault and will continue to offer our members whatever support they need," MEAA Victorian regional director Adam Portelli said.

However the Sovereign Hill boss has denied that they failed to provide a safe workspace.

"Our priority is to provide a safe and harassment free workplace that is in full compliance with all statutory requirements and in the best interests of our great people," Mr Johnson said.
