A WOMAN has died in hospital three days after suffering burns to most of her body at a southeast Melbourne home.

Neighbours said they heard screams and spotted a flaming jerry can at the Cranbourne property on Saturday night before the 22-year-old was taken to the Alfred Hospital, where she died today.

A 29-year-old man who is known to the victim has been questioned by police about the incident, but no charges have been laid.

A spokesman for Victoria Police said: “The exact circumstances regarding the incident are still to be determined and the matter is being investigated by the Homicide Squad with assistance from the Arson and Explosives Squad.”

“They’re a pretty quiet bunch. You never really hear any noises or hear any disturbances,” a neighbour told 9 NEWS on Sunday.

Another neighbour, Daniel McCreedy, told Nine News he found the woman burnt after hearing loud screams.

“It was quite distressing. We found a jerry can in the backyard on fire, which we put out, and then just proceeded to try and look after them,” he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
