Timberlake riffs on Prince for half-time show
Justin Timberlake leaned on his past hits for his Super Bowl half-time show before paying tribute to Prince, singing a cover of 'I Would Die 4 U' alongside a projection of the late musician.
However, he quickly launched into a mash-up of some of his greatest hits from the early and mid-2000s, performing lightning-quick footwork to songs such as Rock Your Body and SexyBack.
Timberlake exposed Jackson's breast to millions of people around the world during their 2004 performance of Rock Your Body. The youngest Jackson sibling was nowhere to be seen on Sunday night despite persistent rumours she would be making a guest appearance.
Timberlake's half-time show also featured a tribute to Prince. The former NSYNC singer sung Prince's 1984 hit I Would Die 4 U while footage of the late singer was projected onto a giant, purple curtain.
There were rumours Prince, who died in 2016 at the age of 57, would appear on stage in the form of a hologram. But these were dismissed by the legendary singer's family and longtime collaborator Sheila E.
The show finished on a lighter note, with Timberlake singing his 2016 hit Can't Stop This Feeling and taking what he described as a "Super Bowl selfie" with a pre-teen from the crowd.
Timberlake's performance came after Pink belted out the national anthem despite battling the flu. The Grammy award-winner raised eyebrows after the cameras spotted her spitting something onto the playing field moments before taking the microphone. She later clarified it was a throat lozenge.
