Malcolm Turnbull has extended his lead over Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister while the coalition has closed the gap on Labor, the latest Newspoll shows.

The poll published in The Australian newspaper reveals the coalition government's best two-party preferred result since April, trailing Labor 48 per cent to 52.

The coalition's primary vote has risen to 38 per cent while Labor's remains unchanged at 37 per cent and the Greens at 10 per cent.

Mr Turnbull now leads the opposition leader 45 to 31 as preferred leader as parliament resumes on Monday.

Meanwhile half of Labor voters have indicated they prefer either Tanya Plibersek or Anthony Albanese to Mr Shorten as leader.
