kangaroo-tent-city-store(2)NSW-based outdoor lifestyle retailer Kangaroo Tent City & BBQs (KTBQ) has fallen into administration, becoming the second outdoor retailer in less than a week to collapse under the weight of the current trading environment.

Established in 1949, KTBQ has six bricks-and-mortar stores in Sydney and retails a range of own-branded and international camping and outdoor products.

The administration comes less than a week after news broke that 40+ store chain The Outdoor Furniture Specialists was in the hands of administrators.

Andrew Spring and Peter Moore of Jirsch Sutherland have been appointed as the voluntary administrators of the business and are actively looking to find a new owner.

“This is a well-established business that has a ready-made, loyal customer base, quality stock offering with unique brands, and large stores in great locations. It provides an ideal opportunity for an existing retailer who has a strong understanding of e-commerce and technology to reinvigorate a great, established brand,” said Spring.

“This is a balance sheet solvent business whose director is taking the early step to enliven the business and ensure his family’s legacy is preserved. Our aim now is to preserve the asset value and employees’ jobs.”

KTBQ has a sister brand called Diamantina which sells a range of own-branded tents, which has also fallen into administration.

Spring did not comment on how much KTBQ owes creditors, or what the specific factors that led to its collapse were, but did say that retailers are facing mounting pressures.

“As the online retail marketplace expands and traditional geographical barriers to entry are removed, Aussie retailers are dealing with more competition than ever before,” he says. “Kangaroo Tent City & BBQs is a case in point. It has experienced declining sales over the past year, part of which can be attributed to greater competition, particularly from online retailers that are able to reach their traditional customer base,” he said.

“While Kangaroo Tent City & BBQs isn’t viable under the current cost structure, another operator with strong e-commerce capabilities could integrate the solid store performance with their own network to strengthen their existing footprint whilst utilising the resulting economies of scale to drive profitability.”

Aside from KTBQ and The Outdoor Furniture specialists January also saw plus-sized fashion label Maggie T fall into the hands of administrators.
