An accused prison escapee who avoided recapture by giving police a false name, before being caught a day later, is due to return to court.

Jermaine Lee Anderson had been on the run since Sunday, when he and fellow inmate Brian Illington Trent Tapim used a wheelie bin and a doona to vault over a fence at the low-security Capricornia Correctional Centre, police allege.

Officers spoke to him after an altercation in Mackay on Wednesday but he slipped off after providing a bogus name.

A day later he was caught while standing on the side of a road near a police station.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Tucker said Anderson was ready to give himself up and provided the correct name immediately when questioned by officers.

Anderson, who has been charged with escaping lawful custody, fronted Mackay Magistrates Court briefly on Thursday.

He is due to return to the same court on Friday.
