A South Australian mayor has been charged with assaulting the wife of a local political candidate.

Whyalla mayor and former Speaker of State Parliament, Lyn Breuer, will face court in March accused of assaulting Angela Antonio.

Ms Antonio is the wife of Tom Antonio, SA Best candidate for the seat of Giles.

Ms Breuer is accused of elbowing Ms Antonio out of a photo shoot at Whyalla's Remembrance Day commemorations last November, according to the Adelaide Advertiser.

She denies the allegations and will defend the charge.

In a statement released on Thursday, the City of Whyalla acknowledged a report had been made to the police.

Chief executive officer Chris Cowley says the matter is now in the hands of the mayor's lawyer.

"These events have no bearing on the running of the city, operations at council offices or regular council services," he said.

Ms Breuer will take a week of leave to seek further legal advice.
