Aaron Roberts' voice cracked with emotion as he told a Sydney court today of his plans to propose to the woman who he shared a “perfect life” with, before her life was cut far too short.
Danielle McGrath was struck and killed by a truck which had run a red light at Caringbah in November 2016.
The couple had spoken about their future but Mr Roberts had not told her he was having an engagement ring made.
“I wanted it to be surprise. I wanted to see her beautiful smile when I got down on one knee,” he said.
Her body was so badly damaged in the collision that her family was only allowed to see her left hand, but that at least allowed Aaron to follow through with his plans - placing the diamond ring on her finger before he said a final goodbye.
“I lost the brightest part of my day, my best friend and my future wife.”
Ms McGrath was crossing the Kingsway on the way to work when the accident happened.
The Crown alleges David Grice was travelling too quickly and turned right on a red signal.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving occasioning death and today faced a sentence hearing.
Danielle McGrath’s father, Bill McGrath, told the court of being told about what had happened.
“I will never forget the screams that Helen let out as she collapsed in our backyard.”
He said they were overwhelmed by the outpouring of love in the weeks afterwards.
“Life will go on but, without Danielle, it will never be the same for the world has lost a beautiful angel.”
Grice is facing a maximum of 10 years behind bars.
