Trump claims 'extraordinary success' in first year

In his first State of the Union address, President Donald Trump says that his administration embarked on a "righteous mission" to make America great and has achieved "extraordinary success".

President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address is wrapped up and media analyses are well underway, meaning it's time to turn attention to the corresponding social media ruckus.

With Trump sure to land on the front page of every major paper in the United States tomorrow, here is a look at some of the early headlines floating around the Twittersphere.

The Daily News in New York is going with a spin on Trump clapping himself, and presumably a close look into the economic victories President Trump claimed as his own.

The Washington Post landed on "A 'new American moment'", an early theme touted by the White House in excerpts of the speech released before it was given.

"This, in fact, is our new American moment. There has never been a better time to start living the American dream," Trump said.

This is the second front page tweet by the Washington Post – their original headline was "A call for bipartisanship" – showing these front pages remain prospects for what will hit the streets come morning, as journalists scramble for the best take.

The Wall Street Journal looks set to follow suit, with a front page headline of, "Trump hails 'New American Moment'".

Now to the good stuff – memes, gifs, and whatever else is manifesting out there.

There were some bemused reactions to comments made by Trump on energy.

"We have ended the war on American energy, and we have ended the war on beautiful clean coal," he said.

"We are now proudly an exporter of energy to the world."

Democratic leader of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi looks as though she will be making future appearances in memes responding to Trump.

Congresswoman Pelosi's thoughts on the address are pretty much what it looks like, she wrote on Twitter that Trump's speech was "self-congratulatory" and lacking "vision".

"He promised unity, but sowed division. America deserves better."

There was also a bit of an embarrassing blunder when it came to printing tickets for the event.

The typo of "Uniom" is particularly sensitive considering Trump's speech is set in the context of a starkly divided country.

Things unravelled further when it was pointed out that "Visitor's Gallery" should have been typed as "Visitors' Gallery".

It also brought back old memories...(for those wondering, there are 3,180,000 Google results for "covfefe").

However, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan looked pretty pleased with how things were going.

Ryan was the third most tweeted person during the State of the Union, after Donald Trump and Barack Obama, Twitter has revealed.

Melania Trump didn't arrive with her a husband, a move that attracted suspicion after reports that her husband paid hush money to a porn star before the election.

Her spokeswoman said she had chosen to ride with the President's invited guests.

"In addition to holding a White House reception and photo opportunity for them, along with their friends and family, she is accompanying them to the Capitol."

A lot of people weren't buying that though.

The Democrats' response was delivered by Joe Kennedy, grandson of Robert F Kennedy and great-nephew of John F Kennedy. He also got some knocks online.

More serious criticism focused on the Democrats' choice to respond to Trump with a white, privileged man, in a move some called tone-teaf.

With 4.5 million tweets, Trumps's speech was the most tweeted about State of the Union address, according to Twitter.

The top tweeted moment of the address was a comment made about standing for the national anthem ("...and why we proudly stand for the national anthem"), thought to be a dig at African American athletes who chose to kneel during the anthem as a political protest.
